Welcome to DK Percussion! DK Percussion specializes in percussion instrument repair and carbon fiber timpani mallets.

The "Evolution" Series mallets all feature a 15" long, 9/16", 1/2", or 7/16" diameter and 100% consistent and gorgeous weave carbon fiber shaft with hardwood cores. The superb balance offered by the carbon fiber shafts and wood cores allows the player to create a beautiful tone using any common timpani technique. Carbon fiber is much more consistent than wood, offering easy pitch matching of all mallet pairs and the feeling of bamboo. The design of each mallet produces the richest possible tone on any timpani. All mallets are wrapped tightly, consistently, and neatly to ensure the best sound and feel from each pair of mallets, without the usual "slapping" sound of other oversized mallets.

Check out the DIY Timpani mallets page for mallet wrapping instructions and a la carte mallet parts ordering. Custom cores available as well.

dk5: Roller - "Molto" Soft
: The dk5 is made up of a 15" carbon fiber shaft and a large (1-1/4" dia.) hardwood ball. Thick German felt is pulled tight and voiced to create a warm sound. The seamless parachute wrap creates a very soft, virtually contact-less attack. This deep and rich sonority is perfect for rolls, both piano and forte, as well as "bell-like" tones, such as the opening to Brahms' First Symphony. The dk5 Roller rivals any other "roller" out there!

dk4: Medium General - "Cartwheel": The dk4 features a cartwheel wrapped wheel. The 1-1/2x1/2" wheel creates unique sound on the timpani, giving way to a very rounded articulation. The cartwheel wrap allows for several different articulations with one mallet. The dk4s serve as a versatile general mallet. This mallet can also double as a roller.*

dk3.5: Medium General - "Medium White": Similar to the dk3, this offers a slightly softer articulation to the DK Percussion Evolution Series. Soft German felt is used instead of the dk3's American felt, soft side out. This mallet is similar to a Duff #3.

dk3: Hard General - "Hard White": The dk3, commonly referred to as the "Hard White" timpani mallets, is a very articulate timpani mallet. A 1-1/8" hardwood ball core is tightly wrapped with a thin layer of white wool felt. A cartwheel style wrap is used to allow the most even pull on such thin felt, and a softer top for less articulate rolling. This mallet serves as a workhorse for any classical timpani excerpt, such as any Beethoven symphony.*

dk2.5: Staccato/Hard - "Softer Gray Felt": Similar to the dk2.5, this offers a slightly more "punchy" sound to the DK Percussion Evolution Series. A thicker liner felt is used to give a "fatter" sound than the dk2, while appearing almost the same in construction. This mallet is perfect for excerpts from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis.

dk3s: Hard General - "Small White": This is a smaller version of the dk3. It owes its slightly more "pointed" articulation to the smaller 1" core. This mallet works well for auditions or small ensembles.

dk3s-a: Hard American - "Small White": Very simi liar to the dk3s and dk3, this mallet is more articulate with the American felt hard side out. The smaller core gives a more "pointed" attack and works well with smaller ensembles and auditions. This mallet works well for Frank Martin's Concerto for Seven Winds and Orchestra.

dk2: Staccato/Hard - "Gray Felt": Similar to the dk3, this mallet bridges the gap between hard felt and chamois. Using the same core and inner wrapping as the dk3, the dk2's outer wrap is thin colored (100% wool) felt. The articulation of this mallet is very hard, very similar to a hard-pressed felt mallet.*

dk1: Extremely Hard - "Chamois": The dk1 Chamois is the hardest mallet in the DK Percussion Evolution Series. The small (1-1/8") hardwood core wrapped in chamois offers extremely hard articulation with the lack of a plastic "slapping" sound. The fine-leather chamois is pulled tight and secured using thread and small amounts of glue. Great for articulated quiet passages and loud thunderous alike. The balance of these mallets prevents over-playing in loud dynamics, yet still project very well over an ensemble.*
